MaWi – Magnetization of Wind Turbines

The wind energy sector is a highly dynamic market exhibiting huge worldwide growth and a strong diversification. Today, more than 76 countries utilize wind energy on a commercial basis, with the continents of Asia and North America currently experiencing the highest growth rates.

The market potential for magnetization facilities e.g. for the magnetizing of magnets in generators used in the production of electricity via wind energy, is enormous. Such systems represent a major future market, not only in Europe but also worldwide.

The newly established legal framework in Germany (Änderung des Erneuerbare Energien Gesetz – Revision of the Renewable Energy Law) drives and strengthens social and political interest in regenerative energies.

Magnet-Physik is determined to participate in the development of this market, and has formed a project team to pursue and develop these special technologies.

Our main research focus is the development of magnetization equipment consisting of an energy impulse source and a magnetization fixture. InSitu-magnetization will allow wind generators up to the Mega-Watt-class to be magnetized after the magnets are assembled into a complete rotor. The final prototype is expected to operate according to this principle and will demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of the concept.

The principle of generating impulses of high electrical current by means of eddy-currents is protected by patents.

Magnet-Physik already makes use of this technology when high magnetic field intensities must be generated in a very tight space (e.g. in small, planar-type “penny motors” with ø10mm). The new project team is challenged to adapt this principle to large-scale systems.

During the development phase we are planning to construct a small-scale demonstration apparatus. This gives us the chance to present the results of our research to a broader spectrum of interested experts at conferences and technical exhibitions (e.g. CWIEME 06/2010 in Berlin).
